On November 3rd, 2007 a state of emergency was declared in Pakistan with an independent and assertive judiciary as its primary target. In Pakistan's history, the judiciary's independence has been attacked by the executive under military as well as civilian dispensations. We believe that without an independent and strong judiciary, the dream of a democratic, prosperous and stable Pakistan will never become real.
Not Again, Never Again is a non-partisan initiative with a single point agenda of enabling people to express solidarity with the principled judges and the lawyers who are bearing the brunt of the state crackdown in Pakistan. This single point agenda has become imperative as we believe that the lifting of emergency and elections by themselves will not change the situation in Pakistan much if we let the opportunity created by the judges and lawyers movement to pass. We urge political parties as well as civil society to make the reinstatement of the judges and the release of all lawyer leaders, their non-negotiable demand. We believe that making such demand loudly and clearly will be seen as measure of their sincerity toward a 'true democracy' in Pakistan.
